NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates
🌍 Join Our NSF REU Summer Program: Innovating for a Sustainable Future! 🌱
Are you ready to be part of the solution to climate change?
Our program empowers students with the skills and techniques to decarbonize our society and create a better, more sustainable world. Over the 10-week program, we will work on:
-
Creating carbon-neutral construction materials
-
Tracing non-point source pollutants in urban streams
-
Engineering sensors for detecting water pollutants at low concentrations (ppb level)
-
Developing plastic upcycling process and products – fuels & chemicals
-
Creating chemical pathways for breaking down water pollutants – dyes & PFAS
💡 What’s in your “engineering toolbox”?
Together, we’ll tackle the challenge of turning waste feedstocks—like plastics, biomass, and water pollutants (dyes and PFAS)—into sustainable materials for the construction and chemical industries. These sectors are among the biggest users of non-renewable resources and key players in climate change, but you can help change that.
🔬 Why it matters:
-
Combat climate change and waste pollution
-
Innovate chemical processes that track, capture, and repurpose wastes
-
Create materials that pave the way for a sustainable society. We want world peace!
🏞️ It’s more than research:
-
Explore local businesses on field trips.
-
Gain insights from industrial speakers.
-
Gear up for “life after college” with career workshops on grad school, job hunting, and more (yes, we’ll keep it real AND fun—promise 😄).
✨ Your journey starts here. Let’s build a future where sustainability isn’t just an option—it’s the way forward.

Attractions
Louisville, Kentucky, is home to:
1) Bourbon. We are surrounded by Bourbon distilleries. We can learn more about the fermentation process, grains, and plant design.
2) Derby. We are crazy about horse races. Churchill Down is by the UofL campus. You can visit Churchill down to learn about horses that won triple crowns and walk around the track.
