NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The goal of this NSF REU Summer Program is to equip students with techniques in Sustainable Construction Materials. Concrete is the major material of the world’s bridges, buildings, roads, and dams. However, the concrete industry releases 4 billion tons of CO2/year, contributing to climate change. Therefore, we need to find a solution to decrease CO2 emissions. In this program, we will develop sustainable construction materials from waste biomass and non-recycled plastics. This approach will be an initial step toward CO2 emission reduction and the production of sustainable construction materials.

In addition to research projects, our program involves field trips (local businesses), industrial speakers, and career-related workshops (e.g., life after college and applications for graduate schools).

Louisville, Kentucky, is home to:

1) Bourbon. We are surrounded by Bourbon distilleries. We can learn more about the fermentation process, grains, and plant design.

2) Derby. We are crazy about horse races. Churchill Down is by the UofL campus. You can visit Churchill down to learn about horses that won triple crowns and walk around the track.
